Afin d avoir une belle vue sur
la ville, passage incontournable : Notre Dame de la Garde.
La basilique fut construite a
la mi 19eme… et fut fraîchement rénovée : extérieur et intérieur. Si
l’extérieur est désormais fini depuis quelques années, je n’étais jamais
retourné à l’intérieur depuis la fin des travaux. Et franchement moi qui
n’étais pas fan des dorures, peintures et de l’encombrement permanent de la
basilique… waou que de changements ! Ils ont restaurés toutes les
mosaïques a l’original et même si c’est toujours très chargé l’effet est
magnifique !
Apres avoir admire les tableaux
a la mémoire de la Marine, on se dirige vers la plateforme pour admirer la
vue : les Iles du frioul, le Vieux Port, Le Pharo, les forts, le palais
Longchamps, le Stade… et j’en passe….
Overlooking the city, the basilica Notre Dame de la Garde
can’t be miss. As the one in Lyon (Basilica Notre Dame de Fourviere), they are
both devoted to Mary, both present the best view over the city, and both built
around mid-19th century. But Marseille is a bit different: the
habitants are devoted to her! They see the basilica as a real pilgrimage. Ask
for the support of Mary for the fisherman, the protection against wars,
diseases… and it seems working. The basilica survived mysteriously to the World
War damages.
The views are breath taking too: one side you have the “Vieux Port”, the city with is million
inhabitants, the cliffs and hills of the “Calanques” and the other side, the
coastline, the bay, the Frioul Islands.
You can really understand the city problem: they can’t
expand anymore…
On the outside the church is “black and white”, inside, 2
differents rooms. Downstairs, a small chapel, really simple. Upstairs, the basilica.
Gold, sculptures, mosaics, ex-voto (memorial plaques in commemoration of Mary
protection). After years of work, the basilica recovered her painting, original
mosaics, as at the first days. Huge amount of work, the result is outstanding.
Everything is intact, shining… what a spectacle!
